In one of the most densely populated countries in the world, land is commonly reclaimed from the sea. 38,000 inhabitants are squeezed onto a land mass that is just 2.02 km squared in size.

Plans have finally been revealed for the new off-shore area which at a size of 2.4 hectares will be known at the Porter Cove, or the 'anse du Portier'. As well as providing much needed new housing the new area will also offer plenty of green space and includes a landscaped park with a hill that will rise to 17 metres in height.

Deputy mayor, André Campana, said, “This new district takes into account the characteristics of an urban area, namely the continuity of pedestrian access, quality of public spaces, facades…

“A feature of this space is notably the landscaped public park and the hill, around which the project is based, and the various pedestrian routes which compose it, such as along the sea front. The outdoor areas will also include public spaces and public facilities including parking and a 5,000 m² extension to the Grimaldi Forum.”

The proposed plans show an additional area of 60,000 squared metres of land and housing for around 700 inhabitants, increasing Monaco's territory by approximately 3%.
