Monaco Princess to christen cruise ship
But will she will she manage to break the champagne bottle...
By the 1800s christening ships began to follow a familiar pattern. A “christening fluid” would be poured against the bow of the ship, although in those days it was not necessarily wine or champagne...
Traditionally a female would do the honours and be named the sponsor of the ship. Maritime superstition, which has always been strong, held that if a ship that wasn’t properly christened it would be considered unlucky. If a champagne bottle didn't break...well, that was a particularly bad omen.
On 13th June 2016, Princess Charlene of Monaco is due to christen the most recent addition to the Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a $450 million Seven Seas Explorer. The ceremony will be a grand affair with world famous tenor Andrea Bocelli performing for the gathered crowds in Monte-Carlo.
Seven Seas will set sail for its maiden voyage on the 20th July 2016, spending its inaugural season in the Mediterranean before repositioning to Miami.
